My research interests are in the applied aspects of earthquake seismology, to include seismic hazard, high frequency ground motion, seismic wave propagation, and especially Computer Programs in Seismology.
SAC (Seismic Analysis Code) is a general purpose interactive program designed for the study of sequential signals, especially timeseries data. Emphasis has been placed on analysis tools used by research seismologists in the detailed study of seismic events. Analysis capabilities include general arithmetic operations, Fourier transforms, three spectral estimation techniques, IIR and FIR filtering, signal stacking, decimation, interpolation, correlation, and seismic phase picking. SAC also contains an extensive graphics capability.

the SERGISAI project developed a computer prototype where a complete methodology for seismic risk assessment has been implemented. An important feature of this prototype is the guidance of end users in making risk assessment at different geographical scales: local, sub-regional and regional. Different goals are pursued at each scale, and different information is also needed.

A magnitude 9.0 megathrust earthquake occurred on December 26, 2004 just off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. The earthquake happened on the interface of the India and Burma plates. Based on preliminary locations of larger aftershocks, approximately 1200 kilometers of the plate boundary slipped as a result of the earthquake. From the size of the earthquake it is likely that average displacement on the fault plane was about 15 meters.
